HISTORICAL PLACES RECLAIMED FOR PUBLIC USE

europe 2014 independent study

Summer between 3rd and 4th year, I spent 6 weeks exploring 5 different countries in western Europe. During the trip, we had to conduct an independent study and I was interested in how landscapes, that once served an important historical purpose, were reclaimed

to serve a different, contemporary function. The study is broken up into 3 categories: Functional Change, Spatial Configuration, and Materials. Each of these categories has several sub-categories that show the variety within each category.

(1) FUNCTIONAL CHANGE: how the use/program of the landscape has changed, without making any alterations to the site boundary of the historical landscape.

A) OVERLAY: covering over another object

B) REPLACEMENT: to take or fill the place of

C) INSERTION: to place or put in
