INTERCHANGE PARK
second year studio
Interchange Park is a 54 acre site located in Blacksburg, VA. Adjacent to the site is a hospital and several neighborhoods of single-family homes. The program for this site consists of a retirement community,

an alzheimers facility, recreation fields, and park space. In addition to the alzheimers facility, I included a therapuetic garden that focuses on 4 sensory experiences that are decribed throughout this page.
MASTER PLAN
The master plan works with the topography of the site, creating picnic space on the tallest points and preserving nature by building low-impact trails in the lower points that are prone to flooding. In addition, roadways and parking lots are effeciently designed and kept to a minimum in order to promote exercise and pedestrian movement through the natural beauty of the site.
DETAIL PLAN
This detail plan focuses on the design of the therapeutic garden for the azheimers facility. In order to design this garden, a lot of research was conducted to figure out how to design for people who suffer from this dibilitating disease. As mentioned earlier, the garden focuses on 4 sensory experiences to increase the quality of life for the patients:
1) interaction with nature, a variety of butterfly bushes & berried bushes to attract wildlife.
2) scent garden, comprised of fragrant plantings that they would have grown up smelling or interacting with which can trigger their unaffected long-term memory.
3) water garden.
4) generational garden, comprised of generational games and elements that they would have played with as kids, again triggering the long-term memory.
