WHITE OAKS CROSSING

third year studio

White Oaks Community is a live-work community in Blacksburg, VA, located a short distance from the Virginia Tech campus and Corporate Research Center. The program consists of residences (apartments, duplexes, townhomes, mixed use retail and office, and single-family homes),

a productive orchard, Stroubles Creek stream rehabilitation, a mixed use downtown center, an elementary school with a natural playground, a community center, and a live-work research neighborhood. This project was done by a group of 4 people.

TOWN CONCEPT

The town concept plan shows the links between the site and its context. Incorporating Blacksburg's main street/urban fabric structure, its agricultural heritage, its resources, such as the university an the Corporate Research Center, and developments like Hethwood and  Warm Hearth Retirement community, the concept shows how the site will interact with and utilize each of these elements.

MASTER PLAN

The site has 3 entry points, each designated with a roundabout that serves as a gateway to the community. The development, because of its ties to Virginia Tech and VT's research, has a strong attitude towards education. All areas of the design promote education whether it is about rehabilitating Stroubles creek, the geology and natural processes of southwest Virginia, or the industrial research that happens at Virginia Tech.

DETAIL PLAN

For my detail plan I focused on a block within the live-work research area in the northern part of the master plan. All blocks have some form of a central courtyard which allows for interaction and education between those who work in the offices and the residents. Community garden boxes draw in residents and the "loose playgrounds" allow researchers to interact with and teach the youth about different science, technology, and engineering fields.
